What is Sports Therapy?

Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury

and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports

specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences

incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training,

competition and where applicable.

A sports therapist will

• Utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise performance, preparation and injury

prevention programmes.

• provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in a recreational, training &

competitive environment

• Assess, treat and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention

• provide appropriate sport and remedial massage in a sport & exercise context

• plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes

Sport and Exercise Therapy is not just about Sports Massage. However, Sports Therapists will

possess massage skills that are an integral part of their scope of practice.

Sports Therapists are not Physiotherapists, but Sports Therapists will apply “physiotherapy” skills

because physiotherapy is defined as “the treatment of disease, injury or deformity by physical

methods including massage, heat treatment, electricity and exercise, rather than drugs or surgery”

Sports Therapists are not just first aiders. More significantly they are first responders who have the

training, knowledge, skills and expertise to provide immediate care in a first response role.

Injury Rehabilitation and Prevention

Sports Injury Rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary approach to the prevention, evaluation, and

treatment of injuries. The first step towards recovery is getting an accurate diagnosis from a

certified sports-injury specialist. Typically, the initial stage of treatment involves reducing pain

and promoting healing. Once pain and swelling are reduced, progressive reconditioning

treatment will begin.

Stevie has worked with Rugby teams over the last decade and understands high impact sports and

sorting needs of male and females of all ages and body shapes. If you are returning from an injury,

targeted exercises to return you to pre-injury function will be prescribed. You will become less

susceptible to future or reoccurring injuries.

Learn how your body moves and how you can move more efficiently. Understand the muscular

imbalances within the body and how to correct them. Become fitter, feel healthier, more skilful, flexible

and mobile with a regular program and training sessions.

Understand how your muscles work and how much easier it is to move through daily life, when more

muscles and the correct muscles engage. Encourage Muscular strength, power and Cardiovascular

fitness. A training plan will also encourage preparation for exercise and activity.

During the session, you will be assessed on your current overall fitness level and find out what your

goals are and what you’d like to achieve. The Program will include functional activities such as post

operative exercises or proprioceptive training. This will ensure that the muscle reconditioning occurs

at the right stage of recovery. The exercises prescribed are sport/activity specific to training or

recovery.

Do you struggle with your running technique and would like running to feel smoother and to be a

faster and stronger runner.

The Sports Injury Rehabilitation Program will benefit those with

• Post-operative injuries

• ACL reconstruction

• Meniscus tears

• Rotator cuff repair

• Acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries

• Sprains and strains

• Tedonitis and bursitis
